The one thing missing is that the set-up is there is only one survivor after a merchant ship is attacked by pirates, and he has to operate the ship alone, when it's designed for a crew of at least 5 or 10 (I don't recall exactly), so there's not the same kind of interaction between crew members as in Das Boot. Does anyone know any worthwhile books that do this in a sci-fi setting?Īll the tension and despair and desperation and ragged-edginess. I was impressed with the extreme psychological and emotional tension, the claustrophobia, the hairtrigger vulnerability to the lethal environment around them, the toll all that takes on the gaunt and almost feral-looking crew, the depiction of desperate and necessary competence without it shading into engineering porn. Solid memoir and depicts the war and its immediate aftermath (1936-1949) from a relatively low ranking position. Started as an Artillery officer along the Eastern Front and was eventually pressed into infantry. “Four Years, Five Fronts,” by Georg Grossjohann. German memoir served on the Eastern Front. “In Deadly Combat,” by Gottlob Herbert Bideemann. Steer clear of anything about the Waffen SS or SS in general. Anything on the Eastern Front is a great bet as well and typically includes an “alien planet” undertone. Most of them will include the same feelings of hopelessness, an endless and pointless struggle, and determination that makes U-Boat memoirs so humanizing. There are plenty of German memoirs from the other services out there. There are plenty more out there, but those are my favorites. Again, it’s a good reference to the obliteration of the U-Boat service. It’s a story of failure and success and heartbreak and retreat. This one details the adventures of Anton Staller, a sailor on U-188 from 1941-1945. “U-188,” by Klaus Willmann is another great little memoir. Very interesting to see how the war was progressing (a virtual apocalypse for U-Boats) from this perspective.

“U-Boat Adventures,” by Melanie Wiggins is a series of individual first hand accounts from various crew members and various boats. Goebeler was on the final patrol of U-505 and the memoir covers that period
#DASBOOT GOODREAADS FULL#
One of the few remaining full U-Boats left. This boat was captured by the USN with most of her crew and is currently in Chicago, IL. A very interesting memoir from a crew member (not commander or officer-equivalent like the two above) of U-505. “Steel Boat, Iron Hearts,” by Han Goebeler. There are some questions of its authenticity as a memoir (a lot of his numbers don’t add up with the official logs from either side of the war), but it is still a solid, terrifying read

Do not listen to the English Audiobook as it is abridged and not labeled as such.

The original German is amazing but the English translation is solid. Keep in mind it is all down hill from here.
